Dallas, TX | Laura Rathe Fine Art is pleased to announce Beneath the Surface, a group exhibition featuring works by acclaimed contemporary artists Max Steven Grossman, Paul Rousso, Nick Veasey, and Gregory Watin. The exhibition opens Saturday, May 17th, from 4:00 to 7:00 PM at their Design District gallery.
Exploring themes of perception, depth, and visual language, Beneath the Surface invites viewers to look beyond what is immediately visible. From the technological to the textural, each artist investigates the boundary between appearance and essence—challenging how we interpret the world around us.
Nick Veasey redefines the invisible through his pioneering use of X-ray photography. By revealing the inner structures of everyday objects—from fashion items to automobiles—Veasey draws attention to the overlooked, exposing a hidden reality beneath polished surfaces. His works blur the lines between science and art, presenting transparency as both concept and medium.
Gregory Watin brings a raw urban aesthetic to the exhibition, blending photography, industrial materials, and expressive mark-making. His layered compositions evoke weathered walls and decaying architecture, speaking to time, memory, and resilience. Watin’s work suggests that even in eroded or broken surfaces, stories endure—etched into texture.
Max Steven Grossman builds photographic collages, merging books, music, fashion, and more into curated visual libraries. His Bookscapes function as intellectual and cultural surfaces—reflections of identity and aspiration. Beneath the orderly facades of these imagined collections lies a deeper narrative about knowledge, desire, and collective consciousness.
Paul Rousso’s practice is rooted in the idea of transformation: from object to gesture, from meaning to material of perception. These works emphasize visual rhythm: curved lines, reflective surfaces, and dynamic compositions that appear to hover between two and three dimensions. Rousso’s work becomes about sensation, movement, energy, and the illusion of weightlessness. Gossamer waves present an invitation to consider surface not as a boundary, but as a fluid space.
Together, these four artists offer a compelling dialogue on what lies beneath form, material, and image. Beneath the Surface invites audiences to pause, reconsider, and reimagine the seen and unseen.
