What sparked the launch of EC Dicken, and how has your vision grown or shifted since then?
My grandfather, E.C. Dicken started selling furniture back in the 1930’s, traveling his territory for about 4 months at a time going from Evanston, IL to Galveston, TX and back. My grandparents decided to move to Texas in 1947 and opened the showroom in 1955 in the Decorative Center. The Decorative Center was the first design center in Dallas that was specifically tailored to the needs of interior designers. Since then, EC Dicken has strived to curate a collection of quintessential and inspiring pieces that reflect our love of tailored luxury and exquisite craftsmanship. Today we aim to provide selections of the best furniture, wallpaper, lighting, fabric, leather and accessories that culminate in an exceptional showroom experience.
Looking back on over 70 years, what have been the most pivotal moments of growth that defined EC Dicken’s journey?
EC Dicken has been fortunate to experience steady growth throughout the years as Dallas has grown, but one of the most pivotal points of growth was the addition of fabric, Griffon Leather and wallpaper lines to the portfolio that we represent. Adding textiles has broadened our ability to serve the design community and allowed us to broaden our customer base and develop relationships.
What principles guide the curation of collections that define EC Dicken’s showroom?
Design trends change over time, and we always aim to be in step with those trends without losing the traditional roots of our legacy. Regardless of the design trends of the time, we value lines that share and reflect our company principles. We see our partners the same way as we see our customers and treat them with the same respect and courtesy, creating lasting partnerships and relationships.
After decades in the industry, what do you feel truly defines EC Dicken’s style and philosophy?
The guiding principles we follow are to build a relationship and establish trust with our customers. The design industry is a service industry, and we work to make sure our customers are taken care of, with all their needs met as efficiently as possible. The sales team at EC Dicken continuously strives to support designers and their projects with ease.
As one of the very first tenants of the Dallas Decorative Center, how has being part of the Dallas Design District shaped your brand and the clients you serve?
It is a tremendous privilege to be a part of the interior design history of Dallas; we have seen many changes and evolutions of the industry over the years, but we still hold on to our core values. We always try to bring the highest quality lines that are in step with design trends, but uphold quality, customer care and integrity. The lines we represent are diverse and unique, and that has allowed us to appeal to a broad number of designers and customers over the years.
When a designer or client visits EC Dicken, what do you hope they discover, beyond just product offerings?
We hope they discover that EC Dicken has a wonderful team who cares about each of their projects and clients; we will do our best to find a solution for their design needs. We work to be transparent in our relationships and communication, to uphold our values. You can buy furniture anywhere, but what you can’t buy is the care and service we do our best to provide.
Looking back, what milestone or accomplishment stands out as especially meaningful for the EC Dicken team?
When your name is on the door, it carries a lot of responsibility. My goal every day is to honor my grandparents and my dad by doing the best I know how, carrying on the legacy of E.C. Dicken. I am very proud that EC Dicken is still one of the three original showrooms that started in the Decorative Center so many years ago. There have certainly been a lot of challenges and changes since we first started and like many companies, we have had to adapt to a new environment and adopt changes. I am proud of how this company has transformed and hope this will make my family proud.
With such a strong legacy, what’s next for EC Dicken: new collections, future goals, or the vision for the next generation?
I am very fortunate to be able to carry on my family’s legacy as an owner, but frankly, I see myself as the custodian of EC Dicken. Eventually, I want to bestow the showroom on to my children, and in the meantime continue to grow a legacy that I am proud to leave behind.
