DDD Spotlight: Meddlesome Moth

Meddlesome Moth, Dallas' first true gastropub, seamlessly blends an extensive selection of the world's best beers with a diverse menu. The Moth is a full-service restaurant in the Design District, specializing in shared plates, unique twists on traditional pub offerings, and individual entrées for those who prefer not to share.

Boasting custom cocktails and one of the finest beer selections in all of Dallas, it offers a welcoming culinary experience for all in a space that is as beautiful as the food.

How long have you been a part of the Dallas Design District?

We will be celebrating our 14th Anniversary this April.

Tell us about the background of Meddlesome Moth and how the Dallas Design District location came to be.

A friend of ours, Mike Ablon, was developing The Design District and shared his plans for the area. In 2010 there were no restaurants here so we created Meddlesome Moth to be a sophisticated dining establishment suitable for business lunches, after-game dining, and just a cool place to hang out.

Since opening, what do enjoy most about the Dallas Design District Community?

The convenience of the Oaklawn exit on Dallas Tollway added early on, has also played a significant role in enhancing accessibility. Over the years we've observed the emergence of numerous apartment communities, new galleries, The Virgin Hotel, an array of additional restaurants and coffee shops, and the recent addition of a running trail weaving through the district.

What can visitors expect when they visit Meddlesome Moth in the Dallas Design District?

An upscale vibe with chef-driven menus, and a world-class beer selection, voted one of the best in the world, with a creative and extensive cocktail list. Whether you’re enjoying your meal indoors, surrounded by Dallas history displayed on the walls, or opting for an outdoor dining experience on our covered patio or in our charming garden area.

Can you share what your Meddlesome Moth is most known for?

Our share plate format at dinner can be a lot of fun, plus our extensive beer selection. We also have a robust brunch on weekends with an elevated beverage program. We were celebrated as one of the best places in the world to have a beer. (World Atlas of Beer by Stephen Beaumont & Tim Webb)

What sets Meddlesome Moth apart from other local and national restaurants?

It’s a one-of-a-kind for us. We designed it to be timeless, and a place to gather with friends and share food together.

If you had to describe Meddlesome Moth’s ambiance in one word, what would it be and why?

Windows.

Three stained glass windows, known as The Holy Trinity, each standing at a height of 13 feet, are visible from every seat in the house. The window designs were a collaborative effort between Jeff Smith, Ben James, Issac Tigrett, and Ellen Soderquist. Following a challenging relocation from their previous residence, these windows underwent meticulous restoration, and due to their substantial size, they had to be suspended from the ceiling.

In what ways has the culinary team at Meddlesome Moth drawn inspiration from the Dallas Design District's unique atmosphere and culture?

Our chefs have tailored our menus to offer a light lunch for designers exploring the DD galleries, as well as heartier meals for nighttime patrons. We have daily chef specials to keep things fresh and interesting and we change our menus seasonally. We use local ingredients where appropriate and source as responsibly as possible. We’ve created a fun brunch vibe on weekends, especially for those who live in the area. The team has perfected exclusive menus tailored for the frequent special event gatherings that take place in this area.

Current favorite menu item or specialty cocktail to recommend:

Although our Shrimp and Grits with jalapeño gravy will forever hold the top spot as our favorite dish, we also have a seasonal cocktail,  “Jalapeño Business”, that boasts a perfect harmony of fresh cucumber and a spicy kick that we adore.

You can visit the Meddlesome Moth at 1621 Oak Lawn Ave, or explore their website to see all that they have to offer.
