Art, science, and the psychology of home. An evening at ALG Fine Art with US Olympian turned neuroscience-based designer Erica McLain.
Your home is not neutral. It is either replenishing you or quietly draining you, and most of us have never stopped to ask which one is happening every time we walk through the door.
That is the premise behind this evening at ALG. Three works from our walls become the starting point for a bigger conversation about how art, light and materials shape your mood, your focus and your sleep.
Leading it is Erica McLain. Before she became a neuroscience-specialized interior designer and founder of McLain by Design Interiors, she was a triple jumper at the 2008 Olympic Games. She has spent more than fifteen years turning that same discipline, the training and the respect for how the body works, into design strategy. First at Facebook and Google, now inside the homes she designs. Every choice she makes, from a colour palette to a textile, is chosen for its research-backed effect on stress, sleep and cognition.
In her own words, she designs spaces "that work with their biology, so their homes actively replenish them instead of quietly draining them."
Gallery director Anna Curnes will join her. Together they will take three works currently hanging at ALG and walk three different paths into the same idea. Starting with a piece of art you love and building a room around it. Starting with a room and layering in art to deepen the feeling. Or starting with how you want to feel and working backwards to find what gets you there. You will see it happen rather than be told about it.
How the evening runs
- 7:00pm. Doors and stations open. Walk them at your own pace, drink in hand.
- 7:30pm. Anna and Erica in conversation. Forty five minutes.
- 8:15pm. Questions from the floor.
- 8:35pm. Back to the stations. They look different the second time.
- 9:00pm. Close.
What to bring
Come with an open eye and a room in mind. You will be handed a card at the door with a map of the works we discussed and a few questions worth sitting with. You will leave with the start of an answer for the rooms in your own home that are ready to change.
Who this is for
Anyone who has ever stood in their own living room and thought something is not right here. Designers, realtors, collectors and the plainly curious are all equally welcome. No prior interest in art required.
Complimentary to attend. Places are limited by the size of the room, so please register so we know to expect you.
ALG Fine Art, 1302 Dragon Street, Dallas.
