Sofa shopping has become my obsession. The trusty fold out I purchased post-graduation just isn’t doing the job any more and I’m finally ready to make an investment in a piece to anchor my living room. At first, I was sold on sectionals, but as I began browsing for living room inspiration I found myself drawn to the noble look of the traditional chesterfield.
In the past year or two, chesterfields have experienced a resurgence in the world of design. Mainstream retailers have been scrambling to get their versions of the iconic couch to market. Known for its deep tufted backs, large rounded arms, and arms and back of the same height, the chesterfield was named in 1900 after Earl of Chesterfield, its inventor.
Though its age and shape lend itself to being called a traditional piece, I’m seeing more and more designs incorporating this seating statement into contemporary spaces. Be it in a modern living room or an executive office, a chesterfield is a sure-fire way to make a big design statement.
As it turns out, chesterfields are easily found in the Dallas Design District. Coming in all shapes and sizes, I’ve rounded up a selection of six of these spectacular sofas for you to ogle. (Keep in mind that upholstery and sizing can be customized.) For this round up I tried to stick to the traditional look but I’ve got a whole file of modern takes on the charming chesterfield to share in another post coming soon!
With its tanned leather upholstery and deep-buttoned tufts, the Chancelor Chesterfield from Baker is exactly what I think of when I think chesterfield:

EC Dicken’s version looks super comfy and kid-friendly.

The white leather and squared feet give the Envelop Sofa a more contemporary look.

This pretty little chesterfield-inspired love seat would make a great accent piece.

Chesterfields look just as good in fabric as leather. This beautiful piece (my fav) shows just how a chesterfield can fit effortlessly into a modern space.
